Since its beginnings, the city has been located on a series of dunes, created by the joint action of the Po and the sea.
The dunes, which are the remnants of the ancient line of sea shore dunes, follow the NE-SE course of the bay from Roman times, when, just immediately south of the present day city, the wide delta of the ancient course of the Po, with its main delta tributaries of the Eridano, Sagis and Caprasia, flowed into the Adriatic.
The fluvial dunes arose from the lesser tributaries when the course of the main mouth of the Po was altered in Medieval times.
